State of the Salmon

SoS - Agency Partnerships Initiative

Alaska Department of Fish and Game

Project Update

Vision

Improved database systems and web-based access for salmon population data in the Copper River and Prince William Sound area will make it possible for (1) area managers to spend less time processing data and more time evaluating available information, meeting management goals, and communicating their progress and (2) stakeholders to explore and acquire non-confidential information about the health of salmon stocks.

Status (last update: 5/26/09)

We started working with ADF&G's Copper River and Prince William Sound Commercial Fisheries staff in Cordova in July 2008 to rescue historic salmon escapement, age, sex and length (ASL) data and develop data management tools. This work aims to increase ADF&G data management capacity, support in-season fisheries management decision-making, as well as improve information sharing and understanding among a variety of stakeholder groups.

July — December 2008
We kicked off with discussions of the project’s vision and scope of work and a contract was signed with Axiom Design & Consulting of Anchorage to conduct a Requirements Analysis.

January — August 2009
User interviews were conducted over the winter and user needs have been consolidated into measurable goals. A preliminary matrix of legacy data holdings has been reviewed and existing ADF&G data management systems have been evaluated. A one day workshop was held in Anchorage with ADF&G data management staff to isolate broad agency goals and needs in March. Explicit use case diagrams and data flow diagrams have been developed to better describe and evaluate plans for the new data management system. Discussions are currently underway with the newly formed Computer Information Services (CIS) team within ADF&G's Commercial Fisheries Division to review a draft Requirements Analysis and identify areas for collaboration. A revised scope of work and Requirements Analysis will likely be finalized in late summer 2009.

September 2009 — December 2010
Data rescue and database development will commence in early fall of 2009. The project team will rely heavily on an iterative process to create functional database and software architecture. The project is scheduled for completion at the close of 2010.
