Our Tuesday night reception will be held at the Vancouver Aquarium in collaboration with the Pacific Ocean Shelf Tracking (POST) Project and the Census of Marine Life (CoML). The Aquarium is consistently voted one of Canada's best-loved attractions and we will have the unique chance to explore it during off-hours. Attendees will also have an exclusive opportunity to learn more about the accomplishments and research findings of the innovative POST and CoML projects.
• POST is a non-profit organization designed to develop and promote the application of electronic tagging technology to study the life history of Pacific salmon and other marine species along the entire length of the West Coast of North America.
• The Census of Marine Life is a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations engaged in a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the oceans.
A shuttle service will be available to take attendees to and from the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel and Aquarium throughout the evening.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Salmonid Specialist Group Meeting (invitation only)
» February 6th, 2009 from 9:00am to 12:00pm at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel
The IUCN Salmonid Specialist Group (SSG) will be holding its annual meeting following the State of the Salmon Conference. The IUCN SSG is composed largely of scientists with a focus on conducting assessments of status and trends of taxa within the Family Salmonidae, which includes a variety of species groups, including trout, salmon, grayling, char, lenok and huchen. In recent years the SSG has focused on developing a practical approach to apply IUCN extinction risk criteria to anadromous Pacific salmon. This meeting is intended to review SSG activities to date, introduce new officers, engage in discussions on issues with past and future assessments, and scope out a plan of work for the next IUCN quadrennium (2009-2012). A key point of discussion will be how the group will contribute to an ambitious effort to carry out a global freshwater biodiversity assessment spearheaded by the IUCN and Conservation International.
Sakhalin Regional Monitoring Program Meeting (invitation only)
» February 6-7th, 2009 from 9:30am to 5:00pm at the Blue Horizon Hotel, Baker-Arrowsmith Conference Room
A partnership monitoring effort between SakhNIRO, Sakhalinrybvod and the Sakhalin Salmon Initiative Center began in 2008 with the support of the Wild Salmon Center and the USDA Forest Service. The program aims to track the status and trends among several species of salmonids and their habitat on a regional (Sakhalin island, Russia) scale. During this meeting, representatives of the local partner organizations will review results of 2008 fieldwork, and the group will discuss and redefine 2009 and long-term objectives and plans. The group will also confirm specific plans regarding proposed 2009 fieldwork locations and research equipment needs. For more information, contact , Wild Salmon Center.
